Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (previously known as Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 4) is a video game published by Ubisoft and due for release in 2010. Excluding expansions, it is the fifth installment in the Ghost Recon series, and was announced to be in development by Ubisoft on January 22, 2009. The game will be a futuristic take on the Ghost Recon series.

Initially, the title was revealed to be Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Predator by an OFLC release. However in December 2009, "Ghost Recon: Future Soldier" was trademarked by Ubisoft, raising speculation that this could be the name for the upcoming Ghost Recon 4. This was subsequently confirmed by an official announcement.

While the release of Future Soldier was targeted for the 2009-2010 fiscal year,Ubisoft later announced that the release date would be pushed back until the 2010-2011 fiscal year to "strengthen" its video game line-up.

Plot
The story has yet to be revealed, but it is known from a live action trailer that a major part of the game will take place in Russia and Norway against a fictional ultranationalist force.

Gameplay
The teaser trailer shows possible new elements to gameplay, including invisibility, miniature combat drones used by both Ghost Recon and enemy forces, and what appears to be shoulder-mounted rocket launchers on the Ghost's armor. All owners of Splinter Cell: Conviction will have access to a multiplayer beta of the game in fall 2010.

Development

Initially, the title of a Ghost Recon release was revealed to be Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Predator by an OFLC release.[19] However in December 2009, "Ghost Recon: Future Soldier" was trademarked by Ubisoft, raising speculation that this could be the name for the upcoming Ghost Recon 4.[20] This was subsequently confirmed by an official announcement.[7] On August 16, 2010, it was announced that a separate PlayStation Portable release would be titled Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Predator.[21]
The release of Future Soldier was initially targeted for the 2009–2010 fiscal year;[10] publication was delayed to the 2010–2011 fiscal year,[22] and then to the "March quarter of 2011" in May 2010,[23] and then to the April 2011 – March 2012 fiscal period.[24][25] The PC version was officially declared as cancelled in December 2011 and replaced by Ghost Recon Online, citing piracy as the main reason.[26][27] However, on January 10, 2012, the PC version was officially reannounced as being in development along with its console counterparts.

Gameplay

The game is a third-person shooter for most of the game, except when aiming using sights or firing from cover at which point the game switches to a first-person camera in order to facilitate more precise aiming. Cover can be partially destroyed, forcing the players to constantly seek other hiding spots. A new feature in the series is the "optical camouflage", a form of active camouflage which allows the Ghosts to become almost invisible. According to the game designer Rafael Morado, the optical camo technology, however, is still a prototype and there are as many disadvantages as there are advantages and its use will initially be extremely limited. For example, the camo will shut off when the player moves too quickly, fires their weapon, or when they are fired upon. According to writer Gabrielle Shrager, it is also possible to control drones.
During E3 2011 Ubisoft debuted Gunsmith. In Gunsmith, the player is able to customize their weapons, down to the gas management parts of every gun. This system also works with Xbox Kinect, which allows the player to customize weapons through hand gestures and voice commands. Gunsmith includes a virtual target range, in which players can test their weapons.
